Mepkin Abbey's monks protected their 3,128-acre monastery from future development this week, formally placing a conservation easement on the land with Ducks Unlimited.
The monks pledged two years ago to preserve their monastery overlooking the Cooper River, a move that helped state and federal officials acquire the nearby 10,697-acre Bonneau Ferry tract.
